Over 60 students from Sonoma County sent their artwork for consideration in the Congressional High School Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” The winners are:

First Place -- Emanuela Martins, Santa Rosa High School “Cinderella During Her Spare Time”

Second Place -- Art Viger, Maria Carrillo High School “Conflicting Existence”

Third Place -- Michael Buxton, Montgomery High School “Untitled”

Honorable Mention - Asho Katz, Summerfield Waldorf School “Combat"

The winner, Emanuela Martins, will receive a free trip to Washington D.C. for an opening exhibit where her work will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. She will also be awarded a $200 gift certificate from Color Folio Fine Art Digital Printing Studio in Sebastopol.

Ms. Martins is an exchange student from Vittoria, Brazil. “I always wanted to do photography, but it was too expensive (in Brazil),” said the 18-year-old Ms. Martins. “Even though my mother wants me to be a lawyer, I now want to be a photographer.”

“This is one of my favorite events and this year is particularly special to award it to a student who is fulfilling her dream of studying in the U.S. and hoping to pursue a career in the arts,” said Rep. Woolsey.

Ms. Martins, and hopefully, her mother will travel to Washington, DC on June 25 for the official opening of the Congressional High School Art Exhibit.###
