Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma), the top Democrat on the U.S. House Education subcommittee that handles federal school nutrition programs, will join members of the Marin County Youth Commission to release a school nutrition survey of 1,100 middle and high school students in Marin County. The results of the survey show that students don’t often have nutritious food choices and they want to be part of changing food option at their schools.

“With children spending much of their waking hours in class, schools must be on the front line to reduce obesity, overweight and diet-related disease,” said Rep. Woolsey. “I am proud to join the Marin County Youth Leadership Institute in announcing the results of their survey conducted with the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services and look forward to working with them to improve school food options.”

Rep. Woolsey has been a leader in promoting school nutrition programs in the nation’s schools. She successfully started a national school breakfast pilot project and continues to fight for universal school breakfast for all students. In the 108th Congress she has successfully passed legislation to improve school food nutrition policies and continues to fight for legislation that will improve school food options. This legislation includes H.R. 2987 with Senators Tom Harkin (IA) and Patrick Leahy (VT) and H.R. 3232 with Reps. George Miller (CA), John Boehner (OH) and Michael Castle (DE). As part of her “Balancing Act” legislation, H.R.3780, to help working families balance work and family responsibilities, she has included a provision for universal school breakfast so that all of the nation’s children start the school day ready to learn.
