Woolsey Honored for Leadership in Reducing Danger From Nuclear Weapons

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma) was honored by the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability for leadership as a longstanding advocate for nuclear disarmament and her “tireless efforts to promote peace and reduce the danger posed by nuclear weapons.”

“Advocates of Nuclear Disarmament have gone through trying times in the last few years.  We’ve had an uphill battle to keep the Bush Administration’s grandiose plans to upgrade the US nuclear weapons arsenal at bay.  While on this dark path, we’ve been helped along the way by a few bright lights in Congress.  I feel so fortunate to be able to honor one of the brightest lights, Rep. Lynn Woolsey - one that has shone brilliantly and has lasted the years,” said Loulena Miles, of the Communities Against a Radioactive Environment.

“The most fundamental thing we can do for our children is to make sure that they live in a safe and peaceful world; not a world threatened by nuclear annihilation,” said Rep. Lynn Woolsey.  “We can do this by relying on the very best of American values - our desire for peace, our capacity for global leadership and our compassion for the people of the world."

“Woolsey’s commitment to her community doesn’t stop at her district line or even within the United States,” said Ms. Miles.  Last year, when many of us from the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability were meeting at the United Nations for the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Congresswoman Woolsey introduced the Non-Proliferation Treaty Commitments Act, a bill that supported strengthening the NPT.  We were able to refer to this bill in our meetings with foreign diplomats to show that there are still sane lawmakers in DC.”

Woolsey is a longtime advocate of nuclear non-proliferation and peace.  She authored the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Commitments Act that demands America keep its word and reduce its nuclear arsenal, introduced legislation called SMART Security which seeks peaceful and diplomatic solutions to international conflict and introduced legislation to transfer $60 billion from nuclear and Cold War era defense systems to America’s social infrastructure.  Woolsey has voted against federal appropriations bills that include testing, research and development of nuclear weapons; has voted against funding for research and development of the “National Missile Defense,” and will continue to lead the fight in Congress towards peaceful and diplomatic solutions to international conflict including the return of U.S. troops from Iraq.

The awards ceremony took place at the Frederick Douglass Museum in Washington, DC where the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability also honored Reps. John Spratt and Eni Faleomavaega; German Lukashin - a Russian Whistleblower, and the Las Vegas Sun and the Deseret News.
