House Committee Announces $400,000 in Health Care Funding for Marin & Sonoma

Washington, DC - Petaluma Rep. Lynn Woolsey today announced the recent passage of $400,000 in federal funding by the House Appropriations Committee, benefiting two local programs.

The committee passed $250,000 to research breast cancer in Marin County.  The money will finance the federal share of a $5.5 million research project to investigate the high and increasing incidence rate of breast cancer in Marin County, which is not only one of the highest in California, but also in the United States.  The funding is in addition to the $1.4 million that Woolsey has secured for such research during previous Congresses.

“Breast cancer is an issue, which threatens women of all ages, regardless of race, class or geographical location,” Woolsey said.  “None of us are safe from its wrath, and millions of brave women, and their families, have fought it.  Unfortunately, women in Marin tend to be at higher risk than others - and it’s vitally important to undertake the necessary research as to determine why.”

The second grant of $150,000 was allocated for Santa Rosa’s Memorial Hospital, and its regional partners.  The hospital network will use the funding to increase its high-tech electronic monitoring equipment - allowing doctors to better monitor patients between their main location in Santa Rosa, and their satellite facilities.

A complete list of Woolsey’s spending requests, along with project descriptions, can be found on her website - a move that she made in order to expand the transparency and openness of the appropriations process.
