Wasserman Schultz Secures Over $1 Million in Health and Safety funding for Miami-Dade Freshman member brings needed funds back to South Florida for Mount Sinai Medical Center and Miami Beach Drug and Gang prevention programs

(Washington, DC)  --  Today, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced that she secured over $1 million for health and safety programs in South Florida.  The projects were included in both the Energy and Water (E&W) appropriations bill and the Science, State, Justice and Commerce (SSJC) appropriations bill.  The E&W project will improve the patient care and diagnosis at Mount Sinai Medical Center through the purchasing of new imaging equipment. The SSJC project will help City of Miami Beach gang and drug prevention programs by providing additional resources for after-school and summertime activities.  The bills move on to the White House where they are expected to be signed by the President.

"I ran for Congress to help improve the lives of South Floridians and to seek solutions for our health and safety challenges" said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.  "I am pleased to have helped the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Center improve their ability to help patients though early diagnosis of life threatening diseases and I am proud that I can help Miami-Dade county in their efforts to prevent gang and drug violence."

"We are very appreciative of the successful efforts of our senators and Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz in support of Mount Sinai's not-for-profit mission to provide quality healthcare enhanced through teaching and research," said Steven D. Sonenreich, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mount Sinai Medical Center.  "This important funding will enable us to invest in technology that will improve patient care and advance our surgical training programs."

"This project is an important part of our gang and drug prevention program," said David Dermer, Mayor, City of Miami Beach.  "We are grateful to Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz and other members of the Florida Congressional delegation for their effort on behalf of the City of Miami Beach."

The following South Florida project was included in the Energy and Water appropriations bill:

1)                  Mount Sinai Medical Center - Imaging and Surgical Equipment Upgrade - In order to fulfill its mission of providing the best health care possible to the community, Mount Sinai is seeking funding to assist it in purchasing new imaging and surgical equipment: As the primary community health care provider for Miami Beach, Mount Sinai Medical Center continues to invest very significantly in state of the art diagnostic and surgical equipment.  This initiative seeks to provide improved imaging technology that is critical to the enhancement of patient care and safety. Representative Wasserman Schultz secured $1 million for this project.

The following South Florida project was included in the Science, State, Justice, Commerce appropriations bill:

2)                  City of Miami Beach Drug & Gang Prevention Programs - This project will link anti-gang and drug efforts of the Miami Beach Police Department to the alternative programs offered by the Parks Department and other organizations such as the Police Athletic League, etc. Continued after-school and summer programs ensure youth "growing-up" within the system. These youth are less likely to entertain outside and detrimental participation in other unsupervised activities, such as involvement in gangs and/or drugs. Representative Wasserman Schultz secured $50,000 for this project.
