Dear El Pasoans:

The United States Department of Labor released a jobs report for the month of April which contained some positive news for our recovering economy.

The U.S. economy added 115,000 new jobs in April and the unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent. As the unemployment rate continues to fall, I am encouraged by the positive trend and will continue to make job creation my top priority for El Paso.

Key findings of the study include the following:

 -- Jobs created: +115,000 (March: 154,000; Feb: 259,000; Jan: 275,000)

-- Private sector jobs created: +130,000 (from +121,000)

-- Unemployment rate: 8.1 percent (from 8.2 percent - the lowest rate since January 2009)

-- Total number of unemployed: 12.5 million (from 12.7 million)

-- Average workweek: 34.5 (unchanged)

Our country is on the right track to economic prosperity. However, more work must be done as our community still faces economic and employment challenges.

Reyes urges UT Chancellor to reverse decision on imposing a ban on alcohol sales at Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. sporting event

This past week, I sent a letter to UT Chancellor Dr. Francisco Cigarroa thanking him for reversing his decision to cancel the Julio Cesar Chavez sporting event and also expressing my concerns with his decision to impose a ban on alcohol sales at the sporting event:

Dear Chancellor Cigarroa:

Thank you for your recent decision to allow the University of Texas at El Paso to proceed with the upcoming Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Andy Lee boxing match at the Sun Bowl Stadium. As you know from our prior conversation I, strongly believe your original decision to cancel the fight was quite misguided and I applaud your efforts to respect the voices of the people of El Paso in allowing the match to go on.

However, I am still concerned that you have imposed a ban on alcohol sales at the event, which once again unduly places El Paso in a different category than other UT System institutions that have hosted similar events without this caveat. Understand that I believe the fight will be a great success regardless as evidenced by the huge outpouring of support from our community that you have personally witnessed. The ban clearly perpetuates the notion that El Paso is somehow unable to appropriately maintain law and order, when in fact the opposite is true - we remain the safest city of our size in the country.

I hope that after careful reconsideration of the ban, you will agree with me that not only can we host this event safely and successfully, but in the end it will reflect well upon UTEP and the UT System.

Sincerely,

Silvestre Reyes

NAVY to christen USNS Cesar Chavez

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the United States Navy will christen and launch the dry cargo/ammunition ship the USNS Cesar Chavez during a ceremony at the shipyard in San Diego that will take place today. In their tradition of honoring legendary pioneers and explorers, the Navy's newest ship recognizes Mexican-American civil rights activist and World War II veteran Cesar Chavez (1927-1993).

Cesar Chavez volunteered for service in the United States Navy at age 17. He later referred to his time in the segregated military as the worst two years of his life, and he carried that experience, along with his childhood spent as the son of a migrant farm worker, with him as he began his lifelong quest to improve rights for farm workers and Mexican Americans.

As a leader in the American labor movement, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers, and his slogan, "Si, se puede" continues to inspire new generations of activists who seek to better themselves and their communities.

I am extremely pleased that the Navy is honoring an important Hispanic American. Paying tribute to Cesar Chavez both as a sailor and as a civil rights leader is a fitting tribute to his service to our nation and shows how far our armed forces have progressed since his time in the Navy.  An advocate for social justice, Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to giving voice to those who couldn't speak for themselves. He was a tireless advocate for strong health care and for good-paying jobs so all people could share in the American dream.
