Washington, D.C., Sep 20 - Today, Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas) announced that Sun Metro will receive $13,540,000 in federal funds from the Department of Transportation through the Federal Transit Administration for on-going regional transportation projects.  This grant, which is part of the Clean Fuels Program, will be used to purchase bus shelters, articulated buses, and fare boxes for the Mesa BRT/RTS corridor project.

Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff joined Mayor John Cook and Congressman Reyes in El Paso last year to highlight the need for federal investment to help meet the growing public transportation needs of the El Paso community.

"Sun Metro continues to grow and expand, and these federal funds come at a critical time in the development of transportation services to make public transit available and accessible to El Pasoans," Congressman Reyes said. "We must continue to improve Sun Metro to ensure El Pasoans have access to multiple routes throughout the city and region. I will continue to support projects that provide federal funds to Sun Metro."

Since 2005, Sun Metro has received over $125 million in federal funding to improve and expand services, including $15 million from the American Recovery Act to construct the Glory Road Transfer Center and the Al Jefferson Westside Transfer Center, and 200 bus shelters. Congressman Reyes has secured more than $14 million in congressional appropriations for new Sun Metro buses.

The Department of Transportation’s mission is to serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.
