Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, the U.S. House of Representatives hosts the Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.  Held annually since 1982, this nationwide competition has allowed each Congressional District to highlight the outstanding artistic achievement of one talented student. The winning entry will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in the United States Capitol for one year. This is an exciting way for high school students to showcase their artistic talents and creativity as well as represent West Texas and the Big Country.

The competition is open to all high school students in the 19thDistrict of Texas. All entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges and the winning student will be notified and sent additional information.

The artwork must meet certain requirements and guidelines. Each piece can be no larger than 28” x 28” x 4,” including the frame. If the artwork is selected as the winning piece, it will be required to be framed and must follow the size guidelines. All artwork must two-dimensional and cannot weigh more than 15 lbs.

Accepted media for artwork are as follows:

                Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers

                Collage

                Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

                Mixed Media

                Computer-Generated Art

                Photography

Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws.

For complete student guidelines, please view the art competition guildines in the document below. Failure to adhere to competition rules will result in disqualification.

The completed artwork must be photographed and submitted via email to Lisa Brooks by Thursday April 26, 2012. Emails must also include the student’s name, address, phone number, school, grade, and the title and medium of their work.  For questions or concerns, please contact Congressman Neugebauer’s Big Spring office at (432) 264-0722 or visit the official competition website.
