Maloney forums on disaster aid assist small businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy

I convened two forums in Manhattan and Queens in late November where Federal, State, and City officials provided small business owners with information on accessing disaster aid. The forums were held at Baruch College on Manhattan’s East Side (shown at right) and at Manducati’s Rustica restaurant in Long Island City.

Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi receives Congressional Gold Medal

I was proud to meet Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi after she received the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington on Sept. 19. President Obama visited Burma in November and met with President Thein Sein and Aung San Suu Kyi and delivers a speech to encourage Burma’s ongoing democratic transition.

WASHINGTON, DC – New York Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D), Jerrold Nadler (D), and Peter King (R) today sent a letter to the leaders of the House and Senate and President Obama asking that the programs created by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act be exempted from the automatic budget cuts mandated by the 2011 debt-limit bill if no agreement is reached in deficit negotiations between the President and Congress to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens), Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn), Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island, Brooklyn), Carolyn McCarthy (D-Nassau), and Yvette Clarke (D-Brooklyn) joined Commissioner Robert Walsh of the New York City Department of Small Business Services on the steps of New York City Hall to announce that the lawmakers were requesting that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) extend the December 31st deadline for small businesses to apply for disaster aid to help them recover from losses stemming from Superstorm Sandy.

This bipartisan bill will help law enforcement process rape kits. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) introduced the Senate companion bill in May.
