September 29, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HOUSE APPROVES HEALTH BILL FOR 9/11 FIRST RESPONDERS

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC) today released the following statement after the House approved, H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, bipartisan legislation to help the thousands of first responders and others exposed to the toxins of Ground Zero. The bill provides funding for a Health Program to monitor and treat first responders and community residents for health conditions related to the terrorist attacks.   It also reopens the September 11, 2011 Victim Compensation Fund to provide monetary compensation for those physically injured by the attacks or by response activities and debris removal.  The legislation is fully paid for by a provision preventing foreign multinational firms that are incorporated in tax haven countries from avoiding tax on income earned in the United States.

“Brave and selfless men and women put their lives, safety and health on the line on September 11 and the days afterward to save and care for their fellow Americans.  It’s time we care for them.  Nine years after the attacks today’s legislation moves us a major step forward toward closing the last major gap in our recovery from the attacks.”
