"Senator Byrd's career is historic not simply because of its length, but because of his accomplishments. He overcame a difficult youth to become a leader in the Senate, and one of its most eloquent speakers. Representing one of the most disadvantaged states in the country, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people of West Virginia. There was no stronger voice for the role of Congress as a check on executive power than his. He made his mark on every major issue that passed through the Senate over the last fifty years, and we will miss his wisdom and counsel."
