Inter-country adoption out of Russia Update as of April 16, 2010

In light of the recent controversial events surrounding inter-country adoptions between the United States and Russia, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) has stated that an inter-agency team will leave Washington, D.C. for Moscow to meet with various Russian Ministry officials in an effort to coordinate a mutually acceptable path forward for inter-country adoptions between the U.S. and Russia. At this time, the DOS reports that they have received conflicting information from different sources within the Russian government but have not received any evidence confirming that adoptions have halted.  DOS is seeking to clarify the information they have received, but emphasizes that as of April 16th, 2010 adoptions were still being processed out of Russia. Numerous visas were issued to adopted children by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

Updates on adoption processing can be found on the DOS website at www.adoption.state.gov or russiaadoption@state.gov. Any Wisconsin residents that have specific difficulties with their inter-country adoption case may contact Laura Ortiz in Senator Kohl’s Milwaukee office at (414) 297-4451.
