SENATE APPROVES $3,409,000 MILLION TO UPGRADE THE WISCONSIN TRANSIT SYSTEM, KOHL ANNOUNCES

WASHINGTON, DC - The US Senate today approved $3,409,000 to enhance Wisconsin's transit system as part of the FY10 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. Senator Kohl, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, identified this project as a priority for funding.

"Access to mass transit is needed throughout the state in order for many to have access to jobs, schools and groceries," Kohl said. "This funding will give transit agencies the ability to expand mass transit options throughout Wisconsin."

The federal funds will be used to support Wisconsin's transit agencies statewide. It will be used to purchase buses, support vehicles, vans and taxis. Funding will also go to construct, upgrade and repair transit facilities and to purchase equipment to improve fleet operations and security. Wisconsin has an aging transit vehicle fleet in need of replacement and funding will ensure that citizens of Wisconsin have continued access to safe and efficient public transportation throughout the state.

The funding measure was passed by the Senate, and now goes to the President for final approval.
