KOHL ANNOUNCES $8.85 MILLION FOR FORT MCCOY, MITCHELL FIELD MILITARY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the US Senate approved Senator Herb Kohl's request to direct $8.85 million in federal funds to Wisconsin military construction projects in the FY10 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. Senator Kohl is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and has identified these projects as priorities for funding.

"It's critical that soldiers who are training in Wisconsin have facilities that meet military standards," Kohl said. "These improvements will increase reliability of electrical services at Fort McCoy and will allow Mitchell Field the ability to safely and adequately house the KC-135 airplane."

The projects being funded in the legislation include:

$3.85 Million for Fort McCoy Range Utility Upgrade This project will provide permanent electrical service to the range complex and replace the current system of petroleum powered generators. The existing system is not reliable, requires a lot of maintenance, and does not meet Army standards. This project is the highest priority of the base commander and is a part of the Pentagon's five year budget plan.

$5 Million for Mitchell Field, Upgrade Corrosion Control Hanger The current hangar used by the 128th Air Refueling Wing is not large enough to fit the entire KC-135 aircraft inside. This leads to maintenance problems and increased wear and tear on the planes as they are subject to the elements. The project will also expand areas for painting, tools storage and administrative space. This project is the top priority of the Adjutant General of Wisconsin and is included in the Pentagon's five year budget plan.  Without the upgrade, the unit's ability to train and maintain the KC-135's will be compromised.

The funding measure was passed by the Senate, and now goes to the President for final approval.
