KOHL STATEMENT ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY PACKAGE AND AUTO INDUSTRY BAILOUT

While it is essential the federal government do everything in its power to help get the American economy moving again, it looks doubtful Congress will reach a consensus on a stimulus plan until it reconvenes in January.

An effective recovery package should include an extension of unemployment benefits and relief for families struggling in Wisconsin and across the country.  Help for the vital but troubled American auto industry cannot be a throw of the dice but rather must come with accountability and the expectations these companies will undergo big changes that lead to their renewal and revival.

Any assistance approved by Congress should come in the form of a loan, with strong preconditions of change for labor and management, accountability and protections for taxpayers.
