Honda Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) issued the following statement on the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month:

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the achievements of the Hispanic community and the vital contributions it has made to keep our society strong, prosperous and free.

I am proud to represent California’s 15th Congressional District , one of the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse areas of the country; and I appreciate the key role Hispanics play in this community.

Since 1968, our nation has stopped to appreciate Hispanic Americans and their contributions in molding our national character and for strengthening our communities. The Hispanic community’s vitality is a great gift to the United States, and is an integral thread in our unique national fabric.

Hispanic Americans have succeeded in numerous professions, such as education, the law, government, business, the sciences, sports and fine arts. This country continues to reap the benefits of Hispanic culture, which finds its roots in Spain, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Hispanic Americans also have contributed to this country by serving in the armed forces and have earned more than three dozen Medals of Honor and numerous military decorations for leadership, bravery and patriotism. Hispanic Americans serving in the U.S. armed forces, National Guard and Reserves continue this proud tradition.

Throughout this month, we would all do well to stop and appreciate the example of hard work, strong values and love of community that Hispanic Americans set every day in the United States.
