202-225-4016 Sarbanes Calls on FTC
Commissioner to Take Action Against Pfizer’s Lipitor Deal Washington, DC – Today Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) sent a letter to Federal Trade Commissioner Jon Leibowitz, urging him to take action against pharmaceutical company Pfizer for a recent deal with pharmacy benefit companies that will prevent consumers from accessing generic versions of the cholesterol drug Lipitor. “This is a sweet deal for the drug
companies at the great expense of consumers, employers and taxpayers,” said
Congressman Sarbanes. “At a time when we should be doing more to slow the
rising costs of prescription drugs, these types of practices should be
prohibited."
News
about Pfizer’s deal broke earlier this week. The patent for the drug expires on
November 30th, and there are two companies that plan to start
offering a generic version of Lipitor starting on December 1st. This
would offer significant savings to consumers who depend on costly medication to
manage their cholesterol. The full letter can be found here.
