Congressman Higgins Meets with Residents At Congress on Your Corner in Silver Creek

Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) kicked off the 2012 Congress on Your Corner program with a stop at the VFW Post in Silver Creek, NY.  Congress on Your Corner provides satellite office hours in the cities, towns and villages where residents can come share their concerns, questions, and ideas.

“Dealing with federal bureaucracy can be challenging but our office is here to help residents cut through red tape and navigate the often difficult federal system,” said Higgins. “We realize that it may not always be convenient to travel to our office in Jamestown so our staff comes directly to you through the Congress on Your Corner program.”

Over the last 6 years the Congressman’s office has made over 700 Congress on Your Corner stops, helping hundreds of people with issues related to Social Security, the Veteran’s Administration, passports, or other federal matters.   In 2012 the Congressman’s office will provide over 140 Congress on Your Corner events in Chautauqua County alone.

The Congressman has also expanded the program to provide specialized events that bring additional resources to residents.  Last year he held an event targeted to seniors and veterans and brought in a number of local agencies to share information on their areas of expertise including:  education, health care, transportation, nutrition. He also hosted a Small Business Congress on Your Corner where local business owners were invited to hear from: the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Small Business Association, SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, Jamestown Community College Small Business Development Center and other experts in the business development field.

During the visit Higgins met one on one with residents and had a larger discussion with the group about the need for infrastructure investment following questions from those attending about the need for improvements at the Peace Bridge and the Springville Bridge.
