My staff and I are working hard to help connect residents of the Fourth Congressional District to resources they need in the recovery from Superstorm Sandy and we’re fighting on our constituents’ behalf for appropriate service from agencies like FEMA and LIPA.

 

Below are some helpful phone numbers and website addresses.  For assistance from my staff and I, you may call my district office at (516) 739-3008 or my Washington, DC office at (202) 225-5516, or write me via the contact form at www.carolynmccarthy.house.gov.  As always, call 911 in case of an emergency and call (888) 684-4274 for non-emergency service from Nassau County.

 

 

LIPA

For the latest updates from LIPA, including their outage map, visit http://www.lipower.org/stormcenter/

 

To report a power outage to LIPA, call (800) 490-0075, visit http://www.lipower.org/stormcenter/ or text OUT to 695472 (requires one-time registration by texting REG to the same number.  You will need your account information).

 

Once you report your outage to LIPA, you may also tell my office and we will fight on your behalf in our communications with the utility.

 

LIPA Community Information Centers -- LIPA has opened three field locations where their staff are taking info about power restoration needs and taking questions about their electrical certification process (open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with times and locations subject to change):

LIPA HOME INSPECTIONS

 

Customers may submit electrical certificates to LIPA by fax to 631-844-3643 or by email to servicecert@service.lipower.org

FEMA

To receive FEMA Disaster Assistance for individuals or businesses, you must first apply for it by calilng 800-621-FEMA (800-621-3362) or visiting www.disasterassistance.gov.  TTY number is 800-462-7585.  To apply via smartphone, visit m.fema.gov

 

When you apply for FEMA Disaster Assistance please have the following available:

  • Social Security Number (including your spouse’s)
  • Private insurance information, if available
  • Address and zip code of the damaged property
  • Directions to the damaged home or property
  • Daytime telephone number
  • A telephone number where we can reach you or leave a message
  • An address where you can get mail
  • If you want your disaster assistance funds sent directly to your bank, provide the FEMA agent with your bank account type (savings/checking), account number and routing number.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT

The Nassau County Pet Shelter is at 241 Miller Avenue in Garden City.  The phone number is (516) 272-0017.

 

 

HOUSING

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has help for people displaced by the storm, steps to take for a storm damaged home, and contacts if you feel you have experienced housing discrimination.  Click here for the HUD website or call HUD at (716) 551-5755.

SHELTERS/WARMING CENTERS/FOOD AND WATER

There is a shelter at Nassau Community College in the P Building at 1 Education Drive in Garden City East.  There is also a shelter at SUNY Old Westbury, at 223 Store Hill Road; at Locust Valley High School at 99 Horse Hollow Road; and at Levittown Memorial High School at 150 Abbey Lane.  Click here for a list of more shelters, warming centers and food and water distribution points in Nassau County.

You can also call a United Way/NYS hotline for post-storm services and help at 211.

 

INSURANCE INFORMATION

The New York State Department of Financial Services is available at the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford daily from 8 am to 8 pm to offer residents advice on how to file an insurance claim for property damage from Superstorm Sandy. Representatives will also be present from several of the nation’s largest insurance companies, including: Allstate, Metlife, New York Life, Travelers, USAA and more.

 

The Department of Financial Services is also running an Insurance Disaster Hotline at (800) 339-1759 to answer questions and help file complaints.  Complaints can also be filed online at http://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumer/fileacomplaint.htm.

Free laundry washers and dryers are available to residents at the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. Residents may operate these appliances free of charge. Free detergent is also available at this facility.

 

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman has opened three heated comfort centers, with charging stations, Wi-Fi and hot showers, at the following locations.  Residents must bring towels and toiletries, and may get more information by calling 311:
