Canada's Decision to Finally Cut Ties with the Iranian Regime is Right Choice, Ros-Lehtinen Says

Monday, September 10, 2012

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today released the following statement on Canada’s decision to close its embassy in Tehran and calling for other countries to do the same. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“In many cases the Iranian regime’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile capabilities, support for Assad’s bloody regime, and sponsorship of acts of violent extremism around the globe have been met with only stern warnings and finger wagging—even as other countries continue ‘business as usual’ when it comes to their political and economic relations with the regime.

“Canada’s recent decision to close its embassy in Tehran, however late, demonstrates that there are serious consequences for the Iranian regime’s continued belligerence. Other responsible nations should follow suit and take steps to increase the isolation of the Iranian regime and its proxy, Hezbollah. Only by severing diplomatic ties with Iran, designating Hezbollah as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, and increasing and fully enforcing sanctions against the regime and its cronies can we cripple the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis.”

Note: Ros-Lehtinen sent a letter to senior European Union (EU) officials on August 16 urging the EU to designate Hezbollah as a foreign terrorist organization.  For a signed copy of the letter, please click here
