Border SecurityBorder Security

Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson continues to lead the way in arguing for pragmatic and effective immigration policies, which necessarily begin with improved border security. Although there is much disagreement in Washington and throughout the country for reforming our immigration policy, there is widespread agreement that current immigration policies do not work.

Nelson believes that too many reform proposals will not work because they attempt to tackle too many issues at once. As any Husker football fan will tell you, even the best Blackshirt can’t tackle four running backs at the same time. Ben Nelson’s smarter, more effective, play is to take aim at one problem at a time and start where the problem starts—at the border.

Ben Nelson knows from visiting with Nebraskans how important the issue of illegal immigration is to them, and the national attention on this issue is proof that Nebraska is not alone.

Nelson authored bipartisan Border Security First bills in the 109 th Congress that would, among other things, double the number of border agents over five years and provide for the construction and installation of effective border security measures from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

Nelson takes pride knowing that we are a nation founded by immigrants but he does not forget that we are also a nation bound by laws. And it’s our responsibility to simultaneously preserve America ’s strong heritage of justice and immigration.

America is simply digging a hole for itself with its failed immigration policies. As his father always told him, the first thing you do in order to get out of a hole is stop digging. He’s working to stop the digging, secure our borders, and halt the flood of illegal immigration so that we can better focus on dealing with the illegal immigrants already here.
