Congressman

Cynthia Lummis

Representing Wyoming

Taxes

Since my arrival to Congress, there have been several proposals to raise taxes on hard-working Wyoming families.  There is never a good time to raise taxes, but it would be particularly harmful to do so during an economic downturn.  The most effective way to stimulate the economy is allowing every American family to keep more of the money they earn.

The tax code has become increasingly complex over the years and affects everyone differently. Over that last 10 years there have been nearly 4,500 changes to our tax code. Congress needs to reexamine this system of incentives – determine which long-standing and widely used deductions and credits are conducive to free market savings and which are nothing more than handouts.  I think everyone can agree that the current system is broken.  I am committed to working with my colleagues to reduce and simplify America’s tax burden.
