Today, House Republicans brought their latest YouCut bill to the House floor – the United Nations Tax Equalization Refund Act (HR 519) – which wouldn’t save taxpayers one dime and jeopardizes urgently needed security upgrades requested by the New York Police Department. The bill failed under suspension of the rules (needing 2/3 support for passage) with a vote of 259-169.

As The Cable reports, NYPD requested the security upgrades:

“This is absolutely critical. The New York Police Department requested that security improvements be made to the U.N. complex because of concerns about terrorism,” Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Esther Brimmer told The Cable in an interview on Tuesday. Since part of the U.N. building actually hangs over FDR Drive, the NYPD is concerned about the possibility of car bombs.

Even Republican Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Peter King (R-NY), opposes the bill explaining, “this would undermine security in New York City, it’s wrong and indefensible.”

In addition the security concerns, this bill is a particularly odd choice for a YouCut bill because it does not produce cost savings or reduce the deficit. According to CBO, “implementing the bill would have no effect on the federal budget.”
