  1. Today’s tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, taking the lives of nurturing adults and innocent children, is heartbreaking. As a father and as a husband of a public school teacher, I have to say that the word that comes most to mind at a time l...
ike this is ‘unspeakable.’ This is a tragedy of unspeakable proportion, an act beyond comprehension. When lives are lost in our schools, which represent a safe haven with the sole purpose of enriching the lives of children, we are left with a profound sadness. I join others in this country and the Western New York community in saying that our thoughts and prayers are with the families and community devastated by the horrific events that occurred today.

  2. Honored to join a community ceremony at the American Legion Post in West Seneca remembering the sacrifices made at Pearl Harbor
  3. Earlier this year, Direct Air’s abrupt shut down left many Western New Yorkers in a tough spot. I am pleased to see that Department of Transportation will be implementing new policies in response to this to protect consumers and hold airlines accountable.
  4. As NYSDOT considers the future of the Skyway, today I spoke on the House Floor about how critical it is for federal infrastructure investments to take the future needs of a community into account.
  5. Investment in medical and scientific research, like that happening at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, is critical to our nation’s economic growth. That’s why I took to the House Floor today to urge my colleagues in Congress to prevent automatic spending cuts that threaten vital National Institutes of Health funding to our region.
  6. Last night I enjoyed taking part in a discussion on the House Floor with my colleagues, Congressman John Garamendi, Paul D. Tonko, and Representative Marcy Kaptur about the pressing need to strengthen our nation’s infrastructure.

  9. Today I was pleased to announce that the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to consider alternatives to the Skyway. I look forward to working with NYSDOT to make infrastructure decisions that will build off of the success we’ve already seen from removing barriers to waterfront access and position our waterfront, city, and community to reach its full economic potential.
  10. I am thankful for family, friends, the sacrifices of previous generations, the opportunity to live in and work for a community and country I love. I am grateful for the extraordinary opportunity to represent Western New York in Congress. This Thanksgiving, and always, wishing you and your family safety, health and happiness.
  11. I am saddened to learn of the passing of my former colleague and friend David Rutecki. David and I had the privilege of serving together on the Buffalo Common Council in the late 1980s through the early 1990s and his keen, analytical style...
had a major influence on me then and continues to inform the way I approach my work as a legislator to this day. Later, when David served as a Vice President at M&T Bank I sought his honest and insightful counsel as banking and regulatory issues came to my desk as a member of Congress. David was a valued Buffalo community leader, a friend to Western New York’s Polonia community and a trusted personal mentor who will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

  12. Yesterday I was glad to have the opportunity to attend a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the Benghazi attacks. However, the attention should be on determining exactly what happened and learning what we can do to protect diplomats more effectively in the future and not on assigning blame.
  13. I was pleased to learn that the Peace Bridge Customs Commercial Plaza construction project has received the necessary federal environmental approvals from the General Services Administration (GSA) to move forward. Working closely with the G...
overnor's office, we have advocated for swift action on this to continue the positive momentum at the Peace Bridge. This $20 million renovation promises many new jobs coming to the Western New York region and is one more step towards expediting the flow of traffic across the Canadian border, opening up new potential for trade and economic opportunity. We look forward to seeing shovels in the ground in Fall 2013.
