Why I voted Yes on S. 2367

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

I voted Yes on S. 2367, the 21st Century Language Act of 2012.

This bill would remove the word "lunatic" from federal law – specifically from Section 1 of Title 1 of the U.S. Code and from banking law provisions regarding trust powers and bank consolidations and mergers.

Insulting and offensive terms such as "lunatic" do not belong in U.S. Code, and the removal of this term has been supported by institutes such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the National Council on Community Behavioral Healthcare, the Clinical Social Work Association, and Mental Health America.

The bill was approved by a vote of 398 – 1.
