Lummis Introduces Bill to Restore Balance to the Federal System

Washington, May 12, 2011 -

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) has joined Representative Rob Bishop (R-UT) in introducing the Repeal Amendment, a constitutional amendment that provide states with the power to repeal any federal law or regulation with a two-thirds majority vote. The Repeal Amendment is designed to help restore the government’s balance of power by renewing the original intent of the Constitution, which reserves to the states and the people powers not otherwise granted to the federal government.

Lummis released the following statement:

“Wyoming knows its people better than Washington ever will. Since I began my service to the people of Wyoming in the U.S. House, I am continually astounded by the ever-increasing reach of the government.  As a member of the House Tenth Amendment Task Force, I am fighting to return to the rightful owner – the states and the individuals – the power that the federal government has grabbed. That is what our founders envisioned, what our Constitution requires and what the people of Wyoming demand.”

Background:

The Repeal Amendment provides that if two-thirds of the states collectively find a federal law or regulation in contradiction with the will and interests of the people, they may repeal the said law or regulation. The check is non-partisan and seeks to restore an appropriate balance of power between the federal government and states and individuals.

To date, the Repeal Amendment has been introduced in 13 state legislatures across the country including New Jersey, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, Utah, Texas, South Carolina, Minnesota, Indiana, and Nebraska, Iowa, and Virginia.

The companion measure has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.).
