Rep. Zoe Lofgren's Q & A session with NOAA and NASA officials about the U.S. weather satellite program during a June 27, 2012 hearing of the House Science Committee's Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight and Subcommittee on Energy and Environment. Rep. Lofgren discussed how improved weather forecasts and warnings help the U.S., citing advanced warnings for hurricanes and tornadoes that help save lives. In fiscal year 2011, the U.S. suffered approximately $60 billion in severe weather related damage.

Witnesses at the hearing included the Honorable Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D., Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction and Deputy Administrator, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Mr. Marcus Watkins, Director, Joint Agency Satellite Division, National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Mr. David A. Powner, Director, Information Technology Management Issues, Government Accountability Office.
