REYES statement on the Senate confirmation of Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense

Washington, Jun 21, 2011 -

Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces, released the following statement on today's Senate confirmation of Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense:

"I am very pleased the Senate unanimously confirmed Leon Panetta to serve as the next Secretary of Defense.  During my time as Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I had the privilege of working closely with Director Panetta as he led the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).  He is one of America's most accomplished public servants, and a tested leader.  His quick confirmation is indicative of the respect he has earned from both Republicans and Democrats.  He brings a deep understanding of the national security threats and the budgetary challenges confronting our nation.  I am confident he is the right person to lead the Department of Defense at this critical time.

"As a former Member of Congress, Chief of Staff to the President, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and Director of the CIA, Secretary Panetta has unparalleled experience that will serve him well in his new role.  I am confident he will continue the great work Secretary Robert Gates has done to transform the United States military into the most agile and capable fighting force the world has ever seen.  I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with Secretary Panetta to ensure our military is well-equipped and well-prepared to protect our nation from global threats.

"I also appreciate the extraordinary service by Secretary Robert Gates who has provided outstanding leadership to the Department of Defense during one of the most challenging times in our nation's history. He has earned our utmost respect and gratitude, and I wish him the best as he returns to private life."
