Ancient Coin Collectors Guild Friend of Numismatics

Congressman Culberson is Friend of Numismatics
by Wayne G. Sayles -last modified 2007-06-29 15:40

Representative John Culberson (R-TX) recently accepted the ACCG Friend of Numismatics award from guild president Peter K. Tompa at the U.S. Capitol.

In conjunction with a presentation by Dr. Roger Bland ofthe British Museum, Congressman John Culberson of the 7th Congressional District in Texas was recognized by the Ancient Coin Collectors Guild for his ongoing support of private collecting. The award was accepted by Mr. Culberson on June 26, 2007 at the U.S. Capitol. Representative Culberson has been instrumental in making scores of United States legislators and decision makers aware that ancient coins provide a direct and relevant link to the past for all of us. His analogy of soft borders during the reign of the Roman
Emperor Valens and border control issues faced in America today suggests an historical parallel. This message has been enlivened by his personal gift of inexpensive but genuine bronze coins of that 4th century Roman Emperor to colleagues in the legislature. In addition to promoting the value of numismatics as a historical connection, he has
exposed the nature and benefits of ancient coin collecting to a wide audience. It was through the efforts of Congressman Culberson and his congenial staff that the lecture by Dr. Bland about cultural property management in Britain was able to be presented in a Congressional Hearing Room at the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

Congressman Culberson joins Representatives Ryan and Petri from Wisconsin; former representative Green from Wisconsin; Senator Bond from Missouri and Senator Schumer from New York in a select group of legislators who have been recognized as Friends of Numismatics for specifically and tangibly supporting ACCG efforts toward the preservation of collector rights.
