Armed Services Committee Markups

Members of the Armed Services Committee consider and mark up numerous pieces of legislation throughout the congressional session.  Six of the committee's seven subcommittees are authorized to markup legislation.  The Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives prohibit committees from authorizing more than six subcommittees to markup legislation.

Any legislation generated by the efforts of the committee's Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee or Defense Acquisition Reform Panel would be marked up by the full membership of the Armed Services Committee.

The most comprehensive legislation, the annual National Defense Authorization Act, authorizes the Department of Defense and the national security programs of the Department of Energy and is marked up by six subcommittees and the full Armed Services Committee.

Members of the committee must also consider and markup the rules package, oversight plan, and staff resolution for the Armed Services Committee at the beginning of each congressional session.
