Service Academy Nominations

**Due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy, Senator Lautenberg and Senator Menendez are currently postponing Service Academy interviews until further notice. Everyone who submitted an application prior to the deadline of October 15, 2012 will be notified soon of their interview date and time. If you have additional questions, please contact Michael Pock in Senator Lautenberg's Newark office at 973-639-8700 or Debbie Curto in Senator Menendez's office at 973-645-3030.

Senator Lautenberg believes that answering the call to duty is one of the most noble, honorable and proudest things someone can do.  Attending a service academy is one way to answer that call.

Each U.S. Senator has the opportunity to nominate candidates to the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Military Academy at West Point and Merchant Marine Academy. The Coast Guard Academy manages its own appointment process.

Service Academy Eligibility

The Academies have four eligibility requirements. Each candidate must:

  1. Be a United States citizen;

  2. Be a New Jersey resident;

  3. Never have been married; and

  4. Be less than a certain age:
  • Candidates to the Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy must not have passed their 23rd birthday by July 1 of the admission year.
  • Candidates to the Merchant Marine Academy must be at least 17 and not have passed their 25th birthday on July 1 of the admission year.

Acceptance of any Service Academy appointment commits a candiate to a nine-year obligation (four years at the Academy and five years of active duty).

How The Nomination Process Works

Senator Lautenberg can submit 10 nominations to each Service Academy every year. The only exception is the United States Coast Guard Academy, which does not require a Congressional nomination.

It is important to understand that the Congressional nomination process is separate from the admissions process. You must apply directly to the Service Academy to receive an appointment. Offers of appointment are made by the specific Academy admissions office, and a nomination from Senator Lautenberg does not guarantee your admission to the academy.

In addition, some applicants may be eligible for other nominating sources: Presidential, Vice Presidential, ROTC, active duty unit commanding officer, and others. Please check the respective service academy website for those eligibility requirements.

If you're interested in applying to be nominated by Senator Lautenberg to one of these academies in the Fall 2012, all materials must be received in our office by 5:00 PM on Monday October 15, 2012.

  • A recent photograph
  • Official high school and/or college transcript. GED if applicable
  • Print-out or photocopy of SAT/ACT scores
  • Three letters of recommendation

Please compile all of your materials and submit them together in one envelope. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

NOTE

Please contact Michael Pock at 973-639-8700 in Senator Lautenberg's Newark Office if you have any questions prior to submission of your application.

Once you have completed the nomination application, please send all materials together in a single envelope, to the following address:
