Jobs & Economy PDF Print

The lack of jobs and the weak economy continue to plague our nation. Three years ago, the Obama administration said that unemployment would never reach 8 percent if the “stimulus” was approved. Today, unemployment continues to hover above 8 percent for over 36 consecutive months, the longest span since the Great Depression. As I talk to Missouri employers, it is clear that the policies of this administration have only made the economy and the job market worse by adding all kinds of regulatory red tape, increasing taxes and adding unfunded mandates.

Small businesses and entrepreneurs create the vast majority of new jobs in America. Unfortunately, these same small businesses face a number of problems like government red tape, difficulty in accessing capital, increased taxes, and uncertainty about the future both economically and what the government may or may not do. The principles for helping job creators are clear:

  • keep government red tape to a minimum so small businesses can focus on their business, not on complying with burdensome federal regulations;
  • keep taxes low so small businesses can reinvest their earnings and hire new employees;
  • help small businesses gain access to capital through banks or innovative methods like crowd-funding, so small businesses can grow and hire; and
  • provide stable and predictable government policies on things like taxes, healthcare and energy.

The House Republican Plan for America's Job Creators follows these principles and we have passed dozens of bills out of the House of Representatives that are free-market based ways to encourage job growth. Click the image below to see our Jobs Legislation Tracker.

Recently, the House passed the JOBS Act with strong bipartisan support. This was a package of bills from Republicans and Democrats that we believe is common ground for Congress and the President to take a positive step to help job creators. The combined bill has passed the House and is now waiting for action in the Senate.

Timeless Principles

Daniel Webster

"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters." --- Daniel Webster served as a Member of Congress and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, as well as United States Secretary of State.
