Washington, Feb 3 -

Congressman Roscoe Bartlett voiced the concerns of 100 colleagues in the Congress and nearly universal opposition from farmers and farm advocacy groups to a proposed regulation by the Obama Administration's National Labor Relations Board (NRLB).  The proposed regulations were the subject of a hearing held on February 2, 2012 by the House Small Business Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade.  Congressman Bartlett is a member of the subcommittee. Critics charge that the regulation would severely restrict educational and work opportunities for the next generation of American farmers as well as increase costs and hobble the operations of family-owned farms.

Congressional Quarterly reported on Congressman Bartlett's participation in the hearing.

"Rep.
Roscoe G. Bartlett, R-Md., drew from his experience of growing up and raising his children on a farm. Farm work, he said, gives children a work ethic and responsibilities.

Bartlett said he generally opposed regulations because he finds them impractical or excessive. The Labor Department’s proposed child-worker rules were both, he said. Parents, he said, will keep their children safe.

'Can’t you find something more productive to do than to hassle our farmers?' he asked."
