LA PLATA, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with members of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce leadership this morning to discuss the fiscal cliff, the Make It In America jobs plan, and other issues important to Charles County businesses.

“Today, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the  Charles County Chamber of Commerce leadership to discuss what Congress must to do prevent the fiscal cliff,” stated Congressman Hoyer. “During our meeting, I reiterated my position that both parties have to put everything on the table and work together on a balanced deficit reduction agreement, that includes both spending cuts and revenues. While I might not like or support every item being discussed, we must have the discussions in order to start reaching agreement. We also talked about the need to prevent a tax hike on middle class families and small businesses. Failure to prevent sequestration and extend tax middle class tax cuts would have a harmful impact on our state, and I will be working to address these issues so that we can end the uncertainty that so many Marylanders are facing.”

“I’m also pleased that I had the opportunity to discuss the Make It In America jobs plan, which I am leading in Congress,” continued Congressman Hoyer. “This plan is a comprehensive jobs agenda that will help businesses grow and create the middle class opportunities Marylanders deserve. I will continue to pursue the Make It In America plan, as well as a big and balanced deficit reduction agreement, and I thank the Chamber for the insight they provided today.”

“Our Chamber of Commerce leadership was honored to have Congressman Hoyer as our recent guest,” stated Carlos Montaque, President of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce. “His dedication to the citizens and businesses of Charles County is apparent and greatly appreciated, and we look forward to the opportunity to continue to work together toward our mutual goals and aspirations.”

As fiscal cliff negotiations continue, Congressman Hoyer will be encouraging both parties to compromise on a balanced solution and provide certainty to middle class families that they will not see a tax hike. He has called on Republicans to immediately pass the Senate’s bipartisan bill that would ensure 98% of individuals and 97% of small businesses would see no tax increase on January 1.

The Make It In America plan aims to strengthen American manufacturing and create well-paying, middle-class jobs. The plan calls for investments necessary for America to out-educate, out-innovate, and out-build its competitors and ensure middle-class families can succeed. President Obama has already signed several Make It In America bills into law, and Congressman Hoyer has called on House Republicans to take up additional bills, many of which enjoy strong bipartisan support.
