  1. Today our nation mourns for those lost and the families that have been shattered by this devastating tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Newton community as we struggle to cope with such senseless violence. This is a wakeup call! Weapons of war have no place on the streets of America. It's time for Congress to act.
  2. Thank you to the men & women at Baltimore’s Bethlehem Steel. You built America. You helped save America. I’m going to work to save your safety net benefits. Affected Sparrows Point employees should visit http://www.dllr.state.md.us/county/b...

and http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/taa_information_guide.pdf for federal benefits information.

America needs a wakeup call. We must get serious about our priorities. It’s not about protecting tax breaks for billionaires, it's about American jobs!

  3. In America, no family should be forced to choose between paying their heating bill & putting food on the table. That’s why I urged President Obama to restore LIHEAP low energy assistance funding to support thousands of Maryland families. Last year LIHEAP helped 149K Maryland households stressed & stretched by high energy costs to keep warm during cold winter months.
  4. Today I met with leaders of AARP Maryland to say I’m fighting to protect Social Security & Medicare from the fiscal cliff. Seniors & families who’ve earned these benefits shouldn’t be forced over the fiscal cliff themselves!

  5. The Navy's plan to move aircraft squadron VAQ-209 from Maryland would mean lost jobs and lost defense in our Nation’s Capital Region. I’ve introduced an amendment to #NDAA with Senators Cardin and Kirk to prevent the Navy's plan without Congressional oversight & approval.
  6. I'm pleased the Senate voted overwhelmingly 92-1 to confirm Judge Paul Grimm to US District Court in MD. MD deserves to have highly qualified judges who will uphold the law & provide equal justice for all. We have that in Judge Grimm.
  7. It’s been 3 years since Alan Gross has been wrongfully imprisoned in Cuba after bogus charges & a sham trial. It’s time for him to be immediately and unconditionally released so he can come home to Maryland his family.
  8. Visiting with Tom Marquardt today at the Annapolis Capital to thank him for 35 years as a journalist & thought leader for Maryland & the Annapolis community.

  9. Super Storm Sandy’s wrath had a measurable impact on residents of Maryland. Over the course of several days, the storm brought unprecedented levels of precipitation and winds, delivering severe flooding and damage in many parts of Maryland, with widespread power outages and downed trees. Nearly a month after Sandy, it’s important that these residents know that they have a federal government on their side.
  10. We need a sense of urgency about solving the fiscal cliff. We need to end the culture of delay in this institution. We need to show that we can govern ourselves and we can put ourselves on a sound fiscal path with the right combination of g...

So I’m here to say to my colleagues from both sides of the aisle, both sides of the Dome and even the White House, let’s get the job done.

  12. I’ll continue to lead the fight in cyber battle so Maryland is the epicenter of cybersecurity in America. We are Ft. Cyber! The battlefield is real & cyber battleships are being built right here in Maryland, keeping our country safer & our state's economy stronger.
  13. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I want the families and communities still struggling to recover from Super-Storm Sandy to know that they have a government on their side. Super-storm Sandy has been a super burden on Marylanders acro...
ss our state. Public assistance and hazard mitigation is good news for communities from the Eastern Shore to Western Maryland. It will provide much needed support as we work to recover and rebuild lives and businesses.

While we’re grateful for this disaster declaration, I will continue to support Governor O’Malley’s request for Individual Assistance for Lower Shore communities impacted by this storm.
