Today our nation mourns for those lost and the families that have been shattered by this devastating tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Newton community as we struggle to cope with such senseless violence. This is a wakeup call! Weapons of war have no place on the streets of America. It's time for Congress to act.

America needs a wakeup call. We must get serious about our priorities. It’s not about protecting tax breaks for billionaires, it's about American jobs!- In America, no family should be forced to choose between paying their heating bill & putting food on the table. That’s why I urged President Obama to restore LIHEAP low energy assistance funding to support thousands of Maryland families. Last year LIHEAP helped 149K Maryland households stressed & stretched by high energy costs to keep warm during cold winter months.
- Today I met with leaders of AARP Maryland to say I’m fighting to protect Social Security & Medicare from the fiscal cliff. Seniors & families who’ve earned these benefits shouldn’t be forced over the fiscal cliff themselves!
- The Navy's plan to move aircraft squadron VAQ-209 from Maryland would mean lost jobs and lost defense in our Nation’s Capital Region. I’ve introduced an amendment to #NDAA with Senators Cardin and Kirk to prevent the Navy's plan without Congressional oversight & approval.
- I'm pleased the Senate voted overwhelmingly 92-1 to confirm Judge Paul Grimm to US District Court in MD. MD deserves to have highly qualified judges who will uphold the law & provide equal justice for all. We have that in Judge Grimm.
- It’s been 3 years since Alan Gross has been wrongfully imprisoned in Cuba after bogus charges & a sham trial. It’s time for him to be immediately and unconditionally released so he can come home to Maryland his family.

- Today I'm leading Team Maryland in supporting Governor O'Malley's updated request for disaster assistance for individuals in Lower Shore communities impacted by Super-Storm Sandy.
- Super Storm Sandy’s wrath had a measurable impact on residents of Maryland. Over the course of several days, the storm brought unprecedented levels of precipitation and winds, delivering severe flooding and damage in many parts of Maryland, with widespread power outages and downed trees. Nearly a month after Sandy, it’s important that these residents know that they have a federal government on their side.
