Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Newton community as we struggle to cope with such senseless violence. This is a wakeup call! Weapons of war have no place on the streets of America. It's time for Congress to act.

When the Repubs oppose make it public, prominent, put them on the evening news defending assault weapons. It will be another nail in their coffin. Sooner or later we will get reasonable gun control, but how many have to die until then.

      Senator, while I applaud your call to Congress to introduce gun control legislation, you cannot stop there. These monstrous crimes this year have been committed by people, people with clear mental health issues, some of whom were open about their intentions. There is more that must be done to help stop this epidemic of crimes against innocent bystanders. As a national imperative, please help to spark the debate and introduce legislation that not only expands access to mental health services, but compels mental health professionals to report individuals whom they suspect may be dangerous, and enables the courts to remove these individuals from society at large until they are no longer a danger to others. Without these changes, while we may constrain some ability of these individuals to obtain weapons, we will not see the end of the violence. Please, help to answer this complex question with comprehensive resolutions.

How many more of our children must be slaughtered before it's the right time?While you're at it, how about working to address mental illness in this country? It's time for our government to work. That’s why I urged President Obama to restore LIHEAP low energy assistance funding to support thousands of Maryland families. Last year LIHEAP helped 149K Maryland households stressed & stretched by high energy costs to keep warm during cold winter months.

    I'm pleased the Senate voted overwhelmingly 92-1 to confirm Judge Paul Grimm to US District Court in MD. MD deserves to have highly qualified judges who will uphold the law & provide equal justice for all. We have that in Judge Grimm.

    Super Storm Sandy’s wrath had a measurable impact on residents of Maryland. Over the course of several days, the storm brought unprecedented levels of precipitation and winds, delivering severe flooding and damage in many parts of Maryland, with widespread power outages and downed trees. Nearly a month after Sandy, it’s important that these residents know that they have a federal government on their side.
