Congressman Tierney Notifies Local Fire Chiefs of Application Period for Federal Fire Grants
Washington D.C. - Congressman John Tierney today alerted fire departments across the district that the application period for the Fire Prevention and Safety (FPS) Grant Program will open on Monday, December 17, 2012 and will close on January 18, 2013. In years past, many fire departments across the 6th district have submitted successful applications to this and other federal fire grant programs. During the last two fiscal cycles, local fire departments across our area received more than $4 million.
"In previous years, I have been pleased to announce millions of dollars in funding for our local fire departments to support fire prevention activities. These federal grant programs offer critical support to our communities, which protect families and help fire fighters stay safe. I look forward to continuing my efforts to support our first responders and working to ensure they have the resources needed," Congressman John Tierney said.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reserved $35 million for the FPS grant initiative. The program helps fund fire departments, national, regional, state, and local organizations, Native American tribal organizations, private and nonprofit organizations and Housing Authorities to develop and implement Fire Prevention and Safety Activities which are designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate incidences of deaths and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards.
In June 2012, Congressman Tierney hosted a FEMA Grants Workshop for local fire chiefs and grant writers, focused on providing tips and information on applying for grants like these. Also the "Get Ready Guide", available at https://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.do?id=6638, may be useful for potential applicants and is provided to answer questions and to help prepare grant applications.
In a letter sent to local fire departments last week, Congressman Tierney also urged those handling the applications to contact his office with any questions.
