Pan American Health Organization Recognizes Congressman Reyes for his Work to Improve Border Health

For the past 30 years Reyes is the first member of Congress to be recognized by PAHO


Washington, Oct 5 -

Today, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) presented Congressman Reyes with the organization’s “Special Recognition Award” for his work in Congress to improve the health of border communities. PAHO/WHO and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) honored Congressman Reyes during their 2011 Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health event. For more than 30 years PAHEF has awarded individuals who have dedicated their lives to advancing public health and health care in the Americas, Congressman Reyes is the only Member of Congress recognized by PAHO.



“I am honored to receive this award and want to express my sincere appreciation to all of the health professionals working to improve the health and well-being of the people living in border communities,” Congressman Reyes said.  “I will continue to work hard to ensure that the health of border residents is a top priority in Congress.”



Congressman Reyes is the founder of the Border Health Conference in Washington, D.C., an annual conference co-hosted by the Texas Medical Association and the Border Health Caucus that addresses pressing health issues on the U.S.-Mexico border.  Congressman Reyes also introduced the Border Health Security Act of 2011 in the House of Representatives that provides increased resources for border health infrastructure and works to improve public health and safety in El Paso and other border communities.
