Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose, Calif.) speaking on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on August 1, 2012, about the importance of global Internet freedom. She expressed her support for H. Con. Res. 127, expressing the sense of Congress to preserve and advance the multi-stakeholder model governing the Internet. Rep. Lofgren talked about how the ICANN governance structure has allowed the Internet to thrive and become the greatest force in modern times for communication, growth and a low barrier entry into unparallelled innovation.

Rep. Lofgren, who was one of the first lawmakers to speak out against SOPA and rally the fight against what many saw as the single greatest threat to Internet freedom, described the need to emphasize U.S. support for a free Internet as it continues to come under threat from outside groups, treaties, and even government action. She cited the transparent, multi-stakeholder governance approach as being crucial for the Internet to remain a global platform for economic growth, human rights, and the free flow of information.
