Addressing Rising Gas Prices

"Here in Indiana, gas prices are too high. While some on Wall Street play games with the oil markets and big oil companies rake in record profits, working- and middle-class families, seniors, and small businesses are bearing the burden at the pump. We should do everything we can to curb high gas prices now and prevent high gas prices in the future."

Here is Congressman Donnelly's plan – including both long- and short-term steps – to lower gas prices for Hoosier families. Click the bullet points to learn more:

________

Long-Term Steps to Prevent High Gas Price

Invest in U.S. Energy Independence

Our long-term energy future is best secured by adopting an all-in approach to our nation's energy, not only for lower fuel prices, but for our national security as well. From wind to nuclear, oil drilling to solar, natural gas to hydrogen, and Indiana biofuels like ethanol, we need to pursue every resource in order to be energy independent.

Approve the Keystone XL Pipeline

Part of an all-in approach should be the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. This project would bring oil to our domestic oil refineries and create jobs right here in America, which has always been an important priority of Congressman Donnelly's.

Short-Term Steps to Prevent High Gas Prices

End Manipulative Oil Speculation

Research shows Wall Street oil speculation is adding 56 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline. We need to stop Wall Street traders from driving up the price of gasoline by playing games with the oil markets. It is unacceptable that Wall Street speculators are harming the budgets of Hoosier families. Congressman Donnelly will continue to put pressure on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to take action to end excessive oil speculation.

End Tax Subsidies for Big Oil Companies

Since coming to Congress, Congressman Donnelly has consistently supported eliminating tax subsidies for big oil companies. The revenue we would save from ending these tax subsidies could go toward paying down our nation's deficit. On May 17, 2011, Congressman Donnelly wrote to House Speaker John Boehner asking that the House consider legislation ending the wasteful subsidies for oil companies making record profits.
