Candler County

Candler County was the state's one hundred forty-eighth county organized and was created in 1914 from parts of Bulloch, Emanuel, and Tattnall counties. It had taken local residents ten years to encourage its passage by the General Assembly. The county was named for Governor Allen D. Candler whocandler_county_courthouse.jpg, after his retirement from office, added to historical research by compiling the state's Colonial, Revolutionary, and Confederate records.

Candler County is located on the route of the old Sunbury Road which connected the port of Sunbury in Liberty County with the inland planters. The road followed a small divide and was favored for wagon travel because it crossed few streams.
