Bulloch County

Bulloch County was created from treaty lands acquired from the Creek Indians in 1796 and was the twenty-first Georgia county to be organized. It originally included portions of Emanuel, Jenkins, and Toombs counties. The county was the scene of many encounters between Patriots and Tories during the Revolutionary War.

The county was named for Archibald Bulloch, the man who presided over the Provincial Congress of July 4, 1775, and then became Georgia's first Provisional Governor in 1776. He died mysteriously in office the next year. Theodore Roosevelt was one of his descendants.

The early settlers' first "highway," an old trading path, led from the Ogeechee to the Canoochee River along what is now U.S. 301 and 25 in Bulloch County. On this route was an important Yamacraw Indian trading post of colonial times.

Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) has announced the schedule for his 2010 Rural Listening Tour.  The 2010 Tour is planned for Tuesday, January 5, Wednesday, January 6, Thursday, January 7, and Friday, January 8.  It will include town hall meetings in 10 counties, with stops in Burke, Warren, Glascock, Washington, Jefferson, Evans, Bulloch, Candler, Emanuel, and Tattnall Counties.  Congressman Barrow will also tour farms and other facilities along the way.

Barrow Announces Medicare Part D Workshops in Savannah and Statesboro

Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) will sponsor Medicare Part D open enrollment workshops in Savannah on December 1, 2009, and Statesboro on December 15, 2009.

Anyone who is enrolled in Medicare Part D or who wants to enroll in the program must sign up or make changes during the open enrollment period which began on November 15, 2009, and ends December 31, 2009. Constituents are encouraged to bring their prescription medications with them to the workshops.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced today that $950,243 in grants will be awarded to four communities in Georgia's 12th District to fund the hiring and rehiring of local law enforcement officers under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Congressman Barrow voted for the recovery Act, and President Obama signed it into law, in February of this year.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced today that $266,319 has been awarded to the 12th District of Georgia by the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).  Federal funds totaling $100 million were made available to the EFSP, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, to bring immediate relief to communities to address unemployment, poverty, and other needs during the economic crisis.

Barrow Announces 12th District Schools to Receive an Estimated $70.9 Million

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced today that an estimated $70,969,000 in emergency education funding has been released for schools in Georgia's 12th District to help save education-related jobs and maintain programs for low-income students and students with disabilities. Schools in the 12th District will receive an estimated $42,376,000 in Title I funds and $28,593,000 in IDEA funds.
