On occasion, I am able to sponsor a high school student for the United States Congressional Page Program.  Congressional Pages work for weeks in the summer or months during the school year on and around the floor of the United States House of Representatives.  Pages serve principally as messengers. They carry documents between the House and Senate, Members' offices, committees, and the Library of Congress.  They also prepare the House and Senate chambers for each day's business by distributing the Congressional Record and other documents related to the day's agenda, assist in the cloakrooms and chambers; and when Congress is in session, they sit near the dais where they may be summoned by Members for assistance.  In the House, pages also raise and lower the flag on the roof of the Capitol.  This prestigious program is highly competitive, and only high school sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply.

Applicants for the summer program may include rising juniors or rising seniors. All applicants must be at least sixteen years old by the date they begin their Page term. A student who is related to a sitting Member of Congress may not serve as a Page.

Applicants for both summer and the school-year page program, must submit a completed page application to their Member of Congress. Along with the application form, the following items are required:

  • Social Security number,
  • signed parental consent form,
  • official transcript of all high school grades to date (from 9th grade through the first semester of the current year),
  • a 50-100 word essay on why you want to be a Congressional page,
  • resume of extracurricular activities,
  • three letters of recommendation,
  • a letter of support from Congressman John Barrow.

Life of a Congressional Page

House pages are paid at the annual rate of $20,181.  Automatic, monthly deductions are taken from their salaries for federal and state taxes, Social Security, and a residence hall fee of $400, which includes five breakfasts and seven dinners per week.  The pages are required to live in the supervised House Page Dormitory near the Capitol. They are responsible for the cost of their uniforms - navy jackets, dark grey slacks or skirts, long sleeve white shirt, and black shoes - and transportation to and from Washington, DC.

During the school year, they are educated in the House Page School located in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The page school, which is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, offers a junior-year high-school curriculum, college preparatory courses, and extracurricular and weekend activities. Classes are usually held five days a week, commencing at 6:45 a.m., prior to the convening of the House.

Once you have completed your application, you may send all required materials to:
