El Paso, Apr 18, 2011 - EL PASO - Tomorrow, April 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Region 19 in the Marshall St. John Board Room, Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) and area superintendents will hold a press conference to announce that nearly $30 million in federal education funding will be awarded to El Paso-area school districts.

In August 2010, Congressman Reyes voted for the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act of 2010 that passed by a Democratic Congress last year. This bill provided $10 billion in emergency aid to states to save or create critical education jobs for 2010-2011. Texas is expected to receive $830 million from the Education Job Fund, and nearly $30 million of these funds are slated for El Paso-area school districts.

“While school districts are making difficult decisions with painful budget cuts, these funds come at a crucial time for our teachers, counselors, librarians, and support personnel,” said Congressman Reyes. “While the Democratic plan would have brought El Paso school districts over $48 million, every dollar helps to support our schools and children during these tough economic times.”

Texas Democrats supported the Education Job Fund, but not a single Texas Republican member voted to provide assistance to our schools.

The estimated amounts for El Paso-area school districts are as follows:

El Paso I.S.D. - $10 million
Ysleta I.S.D. - $7.3 million
Socorro I.S.D. - $7.05 million
Clint I.S.D. - $1.9 million
Canutillo I.S.D. - $1.01 million
San Elizario I.S.D. - $721 thousand
Fabens I.S.D. - $444 thousand
Anthony I.S.D. - $156 thousand
Tornillo I.S.D. - $234 thousand

Total: $28,815,000
