Recommending a guest chaplain is one of the special privileges of being a member of Congress. This practice is a wonderful opportunity to affirm pastoral leaders from many different backgrounds, and it manifests the freedom of worship we enjoy across our nation. Requests are taken on a first come, first serve basis.

If you are a member of the clergy and you are interested in being a guest chaplain, please contact my office at (202) 225-2311.

Procedures for Being a Guest Chaplain

1. Members are limited to one request per Congress. The guest chaplain is assigned the earliest possible date.

2. The Chaplain sends a letter to the guest chaplain (and a copy to the Member) with an assigned date, outlining the procedures for the day and describing the parameters of the prayer. A deadline is set for the prayer to be submitted to the Chaplain’s Office.

3. The guest chaplain provides the Chaplain’s Office with his/her address and phone number while in Washington, in case the time for the legislative session changes.
