MT. PLEASANT, NC – Rep. Larry Kissell (NC-08) took part in the Lions Club Annual Brunswick Stew sale in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday. Lions members sold stew to supporters, with proceeds going to help finance Mt. Pleasant Lions Club projects within the community.
Mt. Pleasant Lions Club is a local chapter of the broader Lions Club International, the world’s largest service club organization, providing various services to those in need. Kissell has been a member of the Biscoe Lions Club in Montgomery County since 1976, and is a past President of the club.
“I always enjoy gathering with fellow Lions for a good cause,” said Kissell. “The extraordinary service and outreach they provide to those in the community is not possible without funding. Bringing the community together over a warm bowl of Brunswick stew is a nice way to spread awareness and raise money for their work, and I felt blessed to be there.”
Athamae Hammil, a resident of Gold Hill, thanked Kissell for stopping by and for all that he does for the people of the 8th District.
“Congressman Kissell was just real nice and I love so much that he was able to stop by,” said Hammil. “He works hard for the people in my category. I’m about to be 89 years old, I’m a widow and on Medicare and I just really appreciate everything he does to represent us. I think the most important thing anyone can do is to help others; I try and do that by calling my friends and family to let them know I’m thinking about them, and Congressman Kissell does his best to take care of us.”
Earlier this year, Kissell led an effort to recognize the Lions Club’s Centennial with a Commemorative Coin to help raise funds for the organization. Kissell’s legislation passed the House and has since moved along for consideration in the Senate.
