MONROE, NC – Rep. Larry Kissell (NC-08) met with officials and employees of Metal Recycling Services (MRS) in Monroe on Thursday. Kissell was joined on the tour by Director Michael Aho, Vice President of Operations Steve Winters, Safety Manager Tony Hankerson, Plant Manager Ryan Mitchell, and Commercial Manager Bert Waggoner.
MRS’s Monroe plant specializes in scrap metal removal and recycling, car crushing, heavy-duty transportation vehicles and containers for industrial or residential needs. The Environmental Protection Agency is considering possible new rules that may classify scrap metal processed at the facility as a “solid waste,” adding burdensome government hurdles for the company. Kissell opposes this overreach, and discussed it during the tour.
“It was exciting to see the operations that take place at this plant,” said Kissell. “Recycling these important resources for tomorrow is not only beneficial to the environment but it also creates good paying jobs and keeps American metal and steel where it belongs. Any government effort to classify scrap metal as solid waste would require MRS and companies like it to completely revamp the way they handle and process these materials as they re-melt them for new products, and I oppose such regulatory overreach. I was impressed by their plant and am committed to doing everything I can to ensure that MRS is able to continue with its current operations.”
Mitchell thanked Kissell for his time and for his appreciation of the environment and their profession.
“We were really glad to have Congressman Kissell visit us and we thank him for taking the time to come see how we run our business,” said Mitchell. “We appreciate his concerns for the environment and the rise in scrap metal theft, and were really pleased with the visit.”
Metal Recycling Services is owned by Charlotte-based Nucor Corporation.
