CONCORD, NC – Today, Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) announced that the city of Concord will receive a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to complete Concord’s Traffic Management System, to assist in managing traffic and congestion throughout the city.
The grant money will provide Concord with the resources to complete projects including the installation of 20-30 traffic surveillance cameras, traffic signal updates, connecting 100-130 signalized intersections, and implementing complete street strategies at pedestrian crosswalks and ramps.
“This is a perfect example of government working together at all levels to provide efficiency and safety for folks traveling in Concord,” said Kissell. “Clearing up congestion throughout the city will help folks get to where they need to go more reliably. Nobody likes sitting in traffic, and through these projects, Concord will run much more efficiently, saving people time and money. This is a good investment in infrastructure for our district, and I was happy to support this effort.”
Kissell had worked with the city to secure funding for this specific project for months, contacting Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez through letters and phone calls urging full consideration of Concord’s application. Concord Mayor Scott Padgett thanked Kissell for his commitment to the people of Concord.
“This funding is absolutely vital to Concord’s overall traffic management plan,” said Mayor Padgett. “We have already invested nearly $2 million into this project, and the federal funding is key to making our existing road infrastructure more efficient while improving air quality In addition to reducing congestion throughout the city by interconnecting over 100 signalized intersections, the Traffic Management Center will also reduce the need for costly future infrastructure investments, provide efficient access to jobs and services, and identify strategies to encourage private sector development. The City of Concord truly appreciates Congressman Kissell’s support in providing federal funding here at home.”
The city of Concord applied for funding through the Transportation, Community, and System Preservation Program of the Department of Transportation.
