MONROE, NC – Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) announced today that $2.1 million in federal funding was awarded to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport for increased safety for aircrafts arriving and departing from the airport, as well as technology to better assist pilots in inclement weather.
The funding will be used in part to clear areas at each end of the runway in order to provide aircrafts with a safe area in the event of an instance of landing short or overshooting the runway. Funding will also be used to upgrade electronic equipment to assist pilots in inclement weather or poor visibility.
“This funding is a great example of government working together at all levels to help improve air safety and provide transportation opportunities to folks in the 8th District and throughout North Carolina,” said Kissell. “These funds will help to improve and maintain the airport and allow folks here to continue to provide a safe service across our region. Regional flight ability is a vital aspect of economic development and a highlight of what our district has to offer in so many of our counties, and I’m glad to have worked to help secure this important funding.”
The funds are being administered at the state level by the North Carolina Division of Aviation.
These capital improvement projects are funded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s block grant program, which awarded more than $22 million in funding to the N.C. Division of Aviation for airports throughout the state.
