Rep. Kissell Takes Part in Read Across America at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School

Rep. Kissell Takes Part in Read Across America at Peachland-Polkton Elementary SchoolPOLKTON, NC – Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) joined other community volunteers to participate in Read Across America Day at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School on Friday. Kissell read “Bark, George,” to four kindergarten classes taught by Krista Herold, Wendy Hildreth, Jennifer Ross and Kelly Miles.

“As a former classroom teacher and an avid reader, I was thrilled to participate in Read Across America at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School,” Kissell said. “It is obvious that Principal Marty Godwin and his faculty and staff are doing an outstanding job with these children. The excitement for learning and respect for other people was on display with every student I saw. It was an honor for me to be part of this event.”

After reading, Kissell told students that he wished for each of them to develop a love of reading, as well as speaking to them briefly about public service and the importance of a good education.

“With a book in your hands, you can travel the world, you can travel to another time, you can travel anywhere your imagination can take you,” Kissell told the students. “A love of reading will last you a lifetime.”

Herold organized Read Across America Day at PPES. She thanked Kissell for his participation in the event as well thanking other community volunteers who read to students during the course of the day.

“Congressman Kissell and our other readers have helped make this day be a success for our students,” Herold said. “I really appreciate him spending time with us and reading to so many of our children, and for expressing to them how important it is that they learn to read and love to read.”

Read Across America is an annual event that takes place on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Schools across the country participate in the program aimed at motivating students to read. Read Across America, sponsored by the National Education Association, is in its 15th year.
